On Q velutina. Also on coccinea. Galls drop in September. An adult emerged the next fall on Nov 20.

Amphibolips tinctoriae, new species

Gall.--A compressed ovate, brownish gall, the opposite sides of which are keeled; the shell is moderately thick, and internally there is a central kernel held in place by fibrous filaments. Length, 2 cm, diameter less than 1 cm.

Two specimens reared October 16, 1871. Found in November 1870 under Quercus coccinea var tinctoria [velutina]

Amphibolips tinctoriae

Almond-shaped, pointed, keeled bud or twig gall, green or reddish, becoming brown, smooth, rather thick-shelled with a central, fiber-supported cell, length 12-20 mm, on Q velutina and rubra in autumn.

Amphibolips tinctoriae

Gall. Issuing from a bud on quercitron or yellow oak (Quercus velutina) and red oak (Quercus rubra) in autumn. Almond-shaped, acuminate, at tip, compressed with the opposite sides keeled. Green or red when fresh and brown when old. Rather thick shelled and smooth. Internally it is hollow with a central larval cell held in position by radiating fibers. Length 12 to 20 mm.

The gall is a deformation of a bud and the characteristic keel shaped sides and compressed form, separates it at once from all other known galls of Amphibolips.
