Fig 61. On Q marilandica. Also on Q falcata. One emerged May 4, another May 25 from galls collected the fall before; others the second spring. Tannic acid content is about half of that in the Aleppo gall and is an iron bluing variety suitable for the making of a writing ink.

Amphibolips gainesi n. sp.

Gall perfectly round and smooth, except the point of attachment to the acorn cup on which it grows. The point is small, it projects slightly and turns to one side. The color is pale brown, the outside not different in color or density from the hard cellular matter be- neath. The larval cell is imbedded in, and is adherent to this mass. Size from one half to one inch in diameter. As my galls had wintered on the tree or lain upon the ground, the color of fresh galls may be different. Like A. prunus Walsh, this species developes on the edge of the acorn cup. It is larger than that species, which is dark and coarsely wrinkled when dry.

Amphibolips gainesi

The gall is attached by a single small point to the side of an acorn cup of the black jack oak (Q. marylandica) . It is perfectly round and smooth and measures from 24 to 42 mm. in diameter. When dry it is brown and rusty brown inside and of a dense corky consistency. Internally it contains a large central larval chamber, which is firmly imbedded in and adherent to the surrounding mass. The imago is one of the largest species and is closely allied to A. prunus. The gall is probably red or yellow when fresh.

Habitat: Texas.

Amphibolips gainesi

Gall. Attached by a small point to the side of an acorn cup of black jack oak (Quercus marilandica). Perfectly round and smooth and of a dense corky substance. Internally it is rusty brown, contains a large central larval chamber, which is firmly imbedded in, and adherent to the surrounding mass. Diameter 24 to 42 mm.

The gall is considerably larger than that of A prunus [quercusjuglans] and does not shrivel up like prunus.
