This cynipid wasp induces large, elongated, fleshy, polythalamous catkin galls, especially on coast live oaks.

Andricus congregatus n.sp.

An irregular, rugose, yellowish brown woody swelling, containing numerous cells growing apparently from the extreme tips of very slender twigs of Quercus chrysolepis, the gall appearing to have a long peduncle, or it may be at the apex of the petiole of a leaf, the leaf in consequence being aborted. The gall is more or less contracted in the middle and varies in length from 2 to 4 cm., and in diameter from 1 to 2 cm.

Seven female specimens, received from Prof. E. W. Hilgard, Oakland, California, and reared November 10, 1876. The gall also occurs on Quercus agrifolia, and Professor Riley says: "A woody deformation of staminate aments and quite abundant on some trees."
