Relationship: The mites produce clusters of stunted twigs along the stems. the attacked twigs appear in the lower part of the trees; infested trees do not appear thrifty. These clusters grow slowly from year to year, harboring numerous mites in the buds along the short stems. Mites cause brooming and bud clustering

Eriophyes paramackiei

Hosts: Quercus agrifolia

A closely related species of E mackiei, Eriophyes paramackiei Keifer, also infests California live oak and causes a broom effect of densely clustered, stunted twigs on one side of the stem. The twiggy branches are stubby, with short, somewhat thickened branchlets, each crowded with numerous buds that contain mites. The tree infested with E. paramackiei shows the broom growths at the lower level of the tree, whereas the upper section does not look thrifty.
