The host of this specimen appears to have been Rubus flagellaris Willd. (Rosaceae), which is possibly the plant referred to by the prior record of R. "villosus" for N. nodulosa (Gagné 1989).

Lasioptera farinosa [partial synonym; retained as valid species for other galls]

Gall.--Knot-like or gouty, elongate or rounded swelling on the smaller terminal branches of blackberry (Rubus villosus [flagellaris]). Often there are several galls upon a single twig. Inside there is an elongate chamber inhabited by a single larva. The larva transforms in the gall and the adults emerge in May and June.

Habitat: NY, OH, NJ

The galls are larvae were described and figured by Professor John B Smith and FM Webster as Lasioptera farinosa but they belong to the new species here described. The gall is quite common everywhere in the vicinity of New York City; it somewhat resembles the swellings produced by the larvae of Agrilus ruficollis, which is found on the large stalks of blackberry.
