Leaf-Gall Midge
Asphondylia barbata

This midge induces small, ovoid, slightly hairy, nondetachable, monothalamous galls, often in clusters, on the underside of leaves of creosote bush. Galls are usually green, sometimes with a dark brown spot near one end.

Diagnosis.— This species and villosa are indistinguishable, but their galls, although showing some resemblance, are distinctly different. Both are squat leaf galls with a rugose, hairless patch at the base. That of villosa is covered for almost its entire length with long hair (Fig. lb), while that of barbata is covered for only slightly more than half its length with short hair.
