The cones are somewhat malformed and discoloured. The seeds are distorted, because a cavity has been formed in which a larva lies. The young larva is pale yellow, later it turns orange. The larva hibernates in a coccon in the gall, and pupates there in spring.

Larvae among the scales. They spin a cocoon in summer and pupate there in spring. Adults emerge shortly after.. Probably only one generation occurs per year.
