This species, not reported by Gagné (1989), causes a downward marginal fold in leaves of Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton (Ericaceae), in which the orange larva feeds (see Fig. 8 in Buhl and Eiseman (2017))... the slide-mounted larvae appear closest to Putoniella and are provisionally filed under this genus at the USNM (R. J. Gagné in litt., 19 June 2017).

I have found similar galls on V. corymbosum L. in Massachusetts and Connecticut..., and a similar gall on Gaylussacia baccata (Wangenh.) K. Koch (Ericaceae) was illustrated by Eiseman and Blyth (2022, Fig. 25).

?Putoniella sp. on Vaccinium angustifolium

The host midge causes a downward marginal fold in leaves of Vaccinium angustifolium (Ericaceae), in which the orange larva feeds (Figure 8 [see paper for photo]). This gall is previously undocumented and adults have not been reared, but two larvae that died before they could be transferred to soil were preserved. Among known cecidomyiid larvae, these appeared closest to those of Putoniella, but adults will be needed to confirm this placement. CSE has found similar galls on V. corymbosum L., but they seem to be uncommon on both hosts.
