Scales in this genus, which cannot be identified to species without microscopy (that is why the "species" listed here is Asterodiapsis "spp"), cause pit galls on the stems of a wide variety of oaks. They may also occur on other Fagaceae. The galls take the form of a raised rim around the sunken scale that can be higher than the surrounding bark. These scales can be found on oak leaves but do not (normally ?) gall the leaves.

NOTE: Very few North American scales cause plant galls. This scale is a rare exception.
