Relation to host: Working from the upper leaf surface the mites cause irregular longitudinal sinuate folds, anywhere from the edge to the midrib. The mites develop in the fold.

Colonization of
a leaf by Eriophyes caliberberis results in considerable contor-
tion; the leaf margin is curled upward, folded, and twisted
across the upper surface toward the midrib. The leaf fold may
involve the entire length of the leaf margin, with one or two
windings forming a tube. The folded leaf eventually becomes
crumpled and brown. The mite colonies are found in the tight
leaf folds.

Barberry Edge Gall Mite (Eriophyes caliberberis)

Galls of this eriophyid mite occur along the margins of new leaves and occasionally the midrib of Oregon grape (Berberis aquifolium), especially the variety known as creeping barberry (B. aquifolium var. repens).
