Andricus cryptus n. sp.

Gall--Small cocoon-like gall one-tenth of an inch in diameter, hidden in a branch under the bark and not visible externally. There is no appreciable swelling of the branch from this gall-fly, the fly escaping by cutting a hole from its larval cell through the bark; observing these holes in the bark led to its discovery.

Described from two specimens reared in May, 1886.

On Q marilandica. Also on catesbaei [laevis], falcata, nigra, velutina, rubra. Cell 2.5 by .9 mm just under bark in wood. Adults emerged Mar 31-Apr 20 (NJ). When cells are numerous and close together the exit holes weaken the twig so it breaks off thus causing an ill-shaped tree in a nursery row and larger trees are sometimes killed. There have been many reports of damage to trees in VA and NJ. The adults are all females. Alternating generation is not known. See Fig 301 also.
